Multi-lingual applications have two key components:
- Input Processing: Handle user input using native multilingual models (BGEM3 embeddings, multilingual LLMs) or translation engines that convert input to your default language.
- Response Processing: Deliver responses using locale-specific content, translation APIs, or LLM-based rephrasing.
Input Processing Approaches¶
Native Multilingual Processing¶
Process user input directly in the original language using multilingual embedding models and LLMs without translation overhead.
Key Components:
- BGEM3 embedding model supports 100+ languages for semantic search.
- LLMs (GPT-4, Claude, Gemini) handle multilingual inputs natively.
Best for:
- Applications requiring contextual understanding across languages.
- Lower latency requirements.
- Cost optimization (single processing call).
Translation-Based Processing¶
Convert user input to the application's default language before processing to ensure consistent internal logic.
Best for:
- Applications with language-specific business logic.
- Legacy system integrations supporting a single language.

Response Processing Approaches¶
Locale-Specific Responses¶
Manually authored responses for each supported language at the node level, providing maximum control over content accuracy and cultural appropriateness.
Configuration:
- Level: Node-level
- Setup: Write response text for each language in the node configuration
- Processing: Match user language to locale-specific response

- Setup: Enable Translation Engine with API credentials in app settings.
- Processing: Automatic translation with language detection.

- Processing: The prompt instructs the LLM on translation and tone transformation.

Static responses are rephrased using LLM, then translated using a translation engine.

- Cost optimization (LLM for rephrasing, lower-cost API for translation).
Considerations:
- Rephrasing may introduce phrases requiring legal review for regulated industries.
- Two API calls increase latency.
Locale-Specific Responses + Response Rephrasing¶
Locale-specific responses in the default language are translated and rephrased using LLM.
When to Use:
- Maximum flexibility with specific content and dynamic delivery.
- Both translation and tone adjustment in a single call.
- Control over base content while enabling personalization.
Agent Nodes for Conversation Orchestration¶
Add business rules in Agent Nodes instructing the agent to respond in the user’s input language, eliminating separate translation configuration.
Business Rule:
Always respond in the same language as the user input, maintaining consistent terminology and cultural context.
